ODI Leeds Digest - June

Because we work on a whole host of things that don't always get any time in the limelight on the blog, we have decided to start doing a 'monthly digest' so everyone can catch up :D

Back in April, we were announced as one of four projects to receive funding via the Leeds Tech Hub Fund. It has been a busy few months since then, juggling our ever busy events schedule with incredible new data projects plus finding the time to start designing the new space. We are pleased to say that plans are now with designers and we aim to have the bulk of the work done in August (which may involve a 'summer shut-down'). We want to kick-off the autumn with an awesome relaunch of the space in September. Keep your eyes peeled for the relaunch party ;)

On 15 & 16 June, Paul Connell (ODI Leeds founder) and Tom Forth (ODI Leeds Challenge Team Leader) were in London as part of the Future Cities Catapult 'Plan-Tech Era' exhibition (it also happened to be London Tech Week). They were there to demonstrate and talk about 'A Clearer Plan,' the planning tool built with open data that has been in development for the past few months. After such a successful project, Future Cities Catapult are interested in extending their 'Future of Planning' project to include an innovation event later this year.

Speaking of innovation events, that brings us nicely onto one of our most successful events so far - #TravelHack, a collaboration with Transport for the North to create an integrated transport system for the North of England. We set ourselves the challenge of writing TfN's data startegy in a day. On 20 June, we had an incredible turnout of more than 80 people in a single day! Coming from various organisations - bus and rail operators to journey planning software and customer data specialists - everyone was united in a recognition that transport just isn't good enough for the North. Challenges were raised around the customer experience and engagement, how to tackle service disruption, intelligent route-finding, how to handle all of the data being created, and much more. By the end of the day, people were hopeful that something could change, and Transport for the North were thrilled with the quantity and quality of the output. All of the outcomes (sketches, photos, notes, video, etc) are on the mini-site and you can still contribute if there is something you want TfN to consider.

Solar Solutions for Leeds
Wednesday 26 July

Leeds City Council is constantly working with partners to identify opportunities for the Council and the City. This has recently included a number of opportunities relating to the development, funding and creation of solar energy generation assets.

The objective of this workshop is to use the framework of SmartKlub Leeds and co-produce an outline delivery plan for solar energy projects across its, and the wider public sector, estate.
