Coastal Economies

We are an island, so we have a lot of coastline. Which also means we have a lot of coastal areas that have very niche and complex economies that are, sadly, not understood well enough. Leisure and tourism may reign but they aren't the only sectors that live (and thrive) in coastal areas. How does business, community groups, arts and heritage groups, and tourism all work together in these ecosystems? And what does that mean for future funding decisions and investments that can positively impact these coastal economies?

In this new collaborative project between ODI Leeds and UK Major Ports Group, we want to explore the current state of data about coastal areas, advocate for more publishing of open data, and create ways to visualise these complex areas that can help others better understand the needs of these communities.
